Whoever Believes
Jesus told Nicodemus how to get to heaven. BELIEVE. As simple as that. But at the same time, it isn't as simple. Believing must be "in Him." The demons also believe, but they believe like the unbelievers who think they believe but they don't. James told them, "You believe there is one God," and hinted that belief there is one God is not good enough. You have to "believe in him."
“There is no one righteous, not even one;
there is no one who understands;
there is no one who seeks God.
John 14: "You believe in God; believe also in me. 2 My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. 4 You know the way to the place where I am going.”
John 9.35: Jesus asks, "Do you believe in the Son of God?" and the man responds, "Lord, I believe!"
With the revelation Jesus gave him, Paul the apostle gives us further insight into this salvation in Christ. It's a complete salvation from the moment God chose us before the earth existed to be "in him," to our predestination for adoption to sonship, to our redemption, pardon, and up to lavishing on us his riches. You get all these when you believe "in him."
Ephesians 1.4-8: For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love 5 he predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will— 6 to the praise of his glorious grace, which he has freely given us in the One he loves. 7 In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace 8 that he lavished on us.
Seal of Ownership
The devil and his demons do not have any of the above. They believe there is one God but they do not believe in him. They are not fully submitted to Christ's Lordship and do not have the seal of ownership that they are God's. Being "in him" puts this seal of ownership on us. This seal is also proof that we have the Holy Spirit "deposited" in us to assure us of future blessings. When the Holy Spirit is "deposited in our hearts," it should manifest Christ's character in us. If his character is not seen in us, no Holy Spirit has been deposited.
2 Corinthians 1-21-22: Now it is God who makes both us and you stand firm in Christ. He anointed us, set his seal of ownership on us, and put his Spirit in our hearts as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come.
Ephesians 1.13-14: And you also were included in Christ when you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation. When you believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession—to the praise of his glory.
This is what's meant by the word "believe" in John 3.16. Whoever believes in him should not perish but have everlasting life. It's not merely believing in your mind---head knowledge---that there is one God or that Jesus died on the cross for our sins. The devil also has this head knowledge. He even personally witnessed the crucifixion. Our "believing" differs from the devil's belief in that we believe "in him" with our hearts (not just our heads). We're in his guardianship, aegis, sponsorship, care and protection.
Romans 10: If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.Many people think all it takes is to "believe" to be assured of heaven. They read passages like John 6.47 (or someone shares it with them) which says, "Very truly I tell you, anyone who believes has eternal life," and think it's plain and simple believing that gets you to heaven. They go to church, get active there, join bible studies, and think they're saved, because they "believe." They miss the important point that believing must be "in him," a total surrendering of life and total submission to Christ's Lordship which will radically transform them in ever-increasing glory.
